Campfire season is upon us and many of us are packing up the car to head for our favorite camp spots. Smokey Bear is often at the top of our minds when having campfires but we also need to protect our forests in another way, by preventing the spread of pests and plant diseases. So, do everyone favor and leave the firewood at home. It is critical to get firewood in the place where you are burning it.

Many pests and diseases including Thousand Cankers Disease, Oak Wilt, Gypsy Moths, Spotted Lanternflies, Emerald Ash Borer, and Asian Langhorne Beetles. These pests will lay eggs and spread disease and fungus tree to tree.

DON’TMOVEFIREWOOD.org recommends:

  • Buy locally harvested firewood at or near your destination
  • Buy certified heat-treated firewood ahead of time, if available.
  • Gather firewood responsibly on site, where allowed.
